GUILDFORD COLLEGE IN HIGH DEFINITION
Guildford College is again leading the way in providing students with the very latest in new facilities and technology to enhance learning. The opening of an open access, state-of-the-art learning hub has now been followed by a high definition, professional quality TV studio for students studying Media
.

The studio, is the newest and most up-to-date of any local college or university and features JVC high definition SDI cameras mounted on hydraulic pedestals, green screen, environmentally friendly LED lights, through-the-wall connectivity and an air conditioning and purge system.

The production gallery is equipped with a fifteen seat observation area. The soundproofing, achieved after exhaustive acoustic tests, ensures that even the most sensitive microphone cannot pick up external sounds.
Students will benefit from this brand new facility by getting hands on practical experience in the very latest media practices and technologies. As well as Media, other students from across the Guildford College Group are also taking advantage of the TV studio. Performing Arts student are using it to enhance their work on soap operas and Sports students from Merrist Wood College are planning to use it for interview and public relations training.

Student Lewis Khan said: “This high definition technology really puts us a step ahead of everyone else going into industry and I think gives us a bigger, better chance of making it somewhere”. Media Tutor Simon Westcott, who himself has over 35 years of industry experience in working for ITV and in the independent production sector, added: “Guildford College’s studio gives students real experience in directing, producing, vision mixing, sound mixing, camerawork and floor managing. In fact they’ll get hands-on experience of every aspect of working in the gallery and studio. It means they will, on completion of a course with us, be ready not only to step straight into industry, but will be equipped with the skills industry needs”.

Further developments are also being planned at the College, including a green room and store to complement the TV studio and new facilities for other subject areas. For those interested in studying Media or other subjects (and places are filling up fast), visit the College on an Open Day – the next is Thursday 15 March from 5.30 to 8.30pm; call 01483 448585 or visit www.guildford.ac.uk
