Laura from Frimley's Photo of a Goshawk

It was at the weekend. We were all sitting in the lounge when we heard this large bang. Something had flown into the french windows. We went and had a look to see if it was injured, then saw it was a hawk.  In its claws was a wood pigeon/collar dove. I ran upstairs and got my camera. By this time the hawk had moved further down the patio. I took the photo through the conservatory window, just as it was about to fly off. Later I found, through researching it on the internet, it was a Goshawk, there are only 410 breeding pairs of this bird in this country.

New summer opening hours for recycling centres

Now that summer is here and there are more hours of daylight, Surrey Waste Management (SWM) is changing from winter to summer opening hours at Community Recycling Centres to give people more opportunities to recycle.

From 1st April until 30th September, residents will be able to use the Martyrs Lane Community Recycling Centre in Woking between 8.00am until 5.15pm Monday to Friday, and from 9.00am until 4.45pm on weekends.

The Martyrs Lane Community Recycling Centre can accept a whole range of recyclable materials from your home, including: household batteries, plastic bottles, foil, scrap metal and garden waste. SWM has also recently recruited 45 new staff to work across its 15 sites to help improve the service and make it easier for the public to use the facilities.

Neil Ducker, Recycling Manager at SWM, said: ”As we get ready for Easter, we would like to encourage residents to recycle the foil and cardboard packaging when they have finished with their Easter eggs. For those who will be using the break to catch up on their gardening, we would also like to remind them that we accept garden waste at all of our sites throughout the county.”

Surrey Waste Management and Surrey County Council are working together to deliver a sustainable integrated waste management solution for the people of Surrey.
