Surrey Takes Gold Medal
in European Championships!
Surrey Taekwon-Do
celebrates as chief instructor Richard Hamilton wins the gold
medal in the 2010 European Championships held in Barletta, Italy.
Richard Hamilton, Annabel Lock, and Charlotte McDermott from
Surrey Taekwon-Do qualified for the England Team and travelled
to Italy to represent the fighting Lions in the European International
Taekwon-Do Federation Championships. Over 20 countries were
in attendance from Russia to Greenland and from Norway to Italy
so the competition was fierce for England. England won numerous
gold medals in patterns and sparring and is now preparing for
the upcoming World Championships planned to be held in Belarus.
Surrey team with World Class competitor and Coach Master Andrew
Whiteley, and competitors Charlotte McDermott, Annabel Lock,
and Richard Hamilton. Charlotte faced a fierce battle with the
World Champion and lost in overtime so came as close as she
could to winning the gold medal as well. Annabel was unfortunate
in losing to Greece who went on to finish in Silver position.
Master Whiteley is one of the most accredited martial arts coaches
in the UK and has Silver and Bronze Medals in the World Championships,
and coaches some of the UK's top fighters in other martial arts
including Kick Boxing and Muay Thai.

Taekwon-Do is a martial
art used both in the military and for serious self defence, but
is also a world renown sport, and will be featured in the upcoming
Olympics in 2012. It is particularly good for fitness and flexibility
and combines aerobic and anaerobic excercises to provide an ideal
training platform for all ages. Taekwon-Do training includes a
good warm up, stretching, punching and kicking pads, and then
sparring and breaking boards with punches and kicks to practice
real power and demonstrate serious capabilities. Surrey Taekwon-Do
is celebrating opening 2 new classes at the University of Surrey
Sports Centre and is recruiting new people including juniors from
the age of 7.

Cedric
Cools of Dorking wins "Top
Competitor of the Year" in his class and the "Inspirational
Award" at Scottish Championships
The International Taekwon-Do Federation
held the Scottish Championships in Glasgow last weekend. This is
the last of the 4 major tournaments held in the United Kingdom Taekwon-Do
Federation within the UK and was open to all proponents of Taekwon-Do
around the world.
Speculation was high after England's dominance in the European Championships
in Slovenia this year. Having won Gold in power in the Male Senior,
Female Senior, and Female Veteran's class, England has had a dominant
role in power across Europe, and this having been after winning
Gold in the World Championships last year.
Surrey Taekwon-Do's only competitor to travel up to Glasgow was
young Cedric Cools driven up by his father and coach Peter Cools
both of whom are originally from Brussels, Belgium.
Cedric has won Gold medals in the other UK Major tournaments this
year but has recently turned 13 and moved into the older 13-17 year
old category putting him in as the smallest of his age group.
The tenets of Taekwon-Do include Perseverence, and The Indomitable
Spirit so Cedric is well trained and is a brave Surrey lad going
forth into the lands over Hadrians Wall to defend his titles from
the Scots.
It was paramount to David and Goliath as Surrey Taekwon-Do's Cedric
Cools took on the much taller, heavier, and older competitors but
Cedric braved it out in the patterns to win the Gold medal.
In the sparring it was a different story however, and Cedric had
to use flying and special technique to reach the targets and score
the points necessary to win against the older lads but somehow managed
to win 4 bouts into the final and unbelievably won the final to
win Gold medal in the sparring as well.
Since this achievement Cedric has won national acclaim in the UKTA
and has been awarded Top Competitor of the Year in his class and
also been awarded the Inspirational Award for the person who has
inspired the most people.
Cedric has won more medals than any other competitor in the Surrey
Taekwon-Do club and will be going for his black belt next year so
look out for Cedric in the England Squad!
Congradulations to Cedric and his father coach Peter Cools for their
Indomitable Spirit.
Surrey Taekwon-Do is held in Dorking Sports Center, Guildford Spectrum,
and Woking Leisure Center and is always recruiting new students.
