Escape
to Wonderland: A
History of Children’s Book Illustration
7 August until 2 January 2011
This exciting and very special exhibition has been curated,
and designed by The Lightbox in partnership with some of the
leading experts in this fascinating area. Come along and immerse
yourself in the delightful world of children’s book illustration,
find firm favourites from your own childhood, explore the past
and prepare to discover new and contemporary illustrators. See
how illustration has changed over the years not only in technique
but also as a reflection of a changing society. The
exhibition opens on Saturday 7 August and Surrey based illustrator
Cassia Thomas, illustrator of “George and Ghost”
and “Lively Elizabeth” will be present to launch
the exhibition and visitors will be able to watch Cassia in
action as she creates illustrations to celebrate the opening.

Alongside the exhibition, we are delighted to have a series
of very special guest lectures. From a rare opportunity to hear
David McKee, internationally renowned illustrator and creator
of Elmer, the Patchwork Elephant, to the wartime experiences
of Judith Kerr, author and illustrator of Mog the Forgetful
Cat, who this year celebrates his 40th birthday.

award-winning gallery and museum? Well find out from Marilyn Scott
herself. Marilyn now has a Director’s Blog and it’s

New Lightbox Sign
If you have entered The Lightbox through our entrance on the corner
of Chobham Road, you may have a noticed a shiny, brand new addition
to our building. We have a new light box sign which shows you
what exhibitions are currently on show, our opening times and
our details. The Lightbox would like to extend a big thank you
to Stock Displays for sponsoring the light box and would like
to welcome them as corporate members. Stock Displays have been
very generous and are also sponsoring the print of the posters
for the lightboxes at both entrances for the year.
Surrey Open Art Competition
Pop down to see the Surrey Open Art Competition if you haven’t
already and be prepared to be amazed by the diversity of talent
here in Surrey! We had over 300 submissions and the judges had
a difficult time selecting the 61 artworks for the exhibition.
The Surrey Open private view took place on Tuesday 16 March and
was a very enjoyable evening. The artists were present to talk
about their work and Mayor Tina Liddington enjoyed the opportunity
to speak to many of the guests. Over 230 people attended and everyone
feasted on the delicious canapés and wine which was very
kindly sponsored by Waitrose in Goldworth’s Park. The raffle
was also a success and three lucky winners went home with prizes
which included free tickets to Painshill Park and Denbies Wine
estate, and a free night’s stay in the Four Poster Bed Suite
at the Asperion Hotel.
The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the Judges’
Prize winner. Ann Keys was awarded the prize for her piece ‘Emergency
Rations’ which featured life-sized fabric sardines in a
tin. Be sure to visit and see the piece yourself! Ann Keys also
generously donated her piece to the Alzheimer’s Society.
Don’t forget to vote for your favourite piece during your
visit. The piece with the most votes will win the People’s
Prize of £200.
The Lightbox would like to thank the following organisations for
helping to make the Surrey Open Art Competition and the Private
View a success.
